This video is quite old and nothing on Google remains the same forever. However, almost everything on that video is still very powerful today. Youtube, PR releases on PRlog.org, and optimization of local search engine listings are currently the most likely ways to hit page 1 organically for a local business. Craig’sList has dropped way down, as has Flickr.com. Article submissions still seem good for back links, but not for high ranking.
Your primary website can still get on page1 for local long tails (bakery Santa Monica), but it isn’t as easy as it was. There is growing concern that with Google adding social networks to search, this will push websites down even more. However, most of my clients websites do very well on local search.
Google Maps is critical for many businesses, such as emergency services and such. It is important for all local biz, and will only become more so. Most of my incoming phone calls from new prospects are regarding how to get in the 7 pack on Maps.
